16.15 – 17.45 Working Group Sessions (II): Designing and implementing institutional strategies
1. Institutional Profiles:
- What profiles do we value and why, and what does this mean for the level of internal heterogeneity we allow our institutions to have? In this context, synergies between different institutional functions will be considered to identify possible mutual beneficial linkages
- How are different profiles being promoted through regulations, funding sources and instruments, quality standards and accreditation criteria?
- Explore issues around parity of esteem within academic standards

Rapporteur: Tia Loukkola, Head of Unit, European University Association
2. Staff Profiles :
- Which reward structures, hiring and promotion criteria, and types of contracts should universities consider for attracting and retaining high quality and committed university staff, what are the key elements of a working environment that permits this what are the framework conditions needed to do so successfully?
- When considering diverse practices in relation to national career patterns and incentives that drive university activity (e.g. national salary and promotion requirements or constraints, flexibility of staff profiles and differentiated reward systems) which examples of good practice could be identified?

3. Student Profiles :
- How desirable are diverse student profiles, how could one best create diverse student profiles, and what are the implications, costs and benefits and how do they relate to the institutional profile?
- How do funding systems and institutions take account of different needs (e.g. stipends, study modalities for part time students, extra support for “high-risk” students) of students thereby enhancing or perhaps unintentionally limiting access?
- How does one cater effectively to diverse student profiles in teaching methodologies and programme profiles
- How are universities adapting to the needs of international students? What does an increased international student population and staff mean for student services?
- How can institutions exploit the innovative potential of international, ethnic, cultural, gender and religious diversity in teaching and learning environments?

- How do incentives for different research strategies differ and what is their impact on strategic development processes?
- What interrelationships between different portfolios of research should be considered for strategic planning purposes and how should this be translated into different kinds of cooperation initiatives i.e. inter-institutional, intra-institutional, and public-private partnerships?
- What framework conditions are needed for different research portfolios and different partnerships and which are the most appropriate instruments to reach these goals?
- How do universities engage students in research (all cycles)?
