Higher Education Sustainability Initiative for Rio+20

At a side event of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, leaders from the international academic community came together to announce commitments with regard to the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative for Rio+20, an initiative facilitated by an umbrella of United Nations partner organisations, including UNESCO.

University leaders are invited to sign a declaration emphasising the special responsibility of higher education institutions to provide leadership on education for sustainable development.

The declaration includes five key actions: teaching sustainable development concepts; encouraging research on sustainable development issues; green campuses; supporting sustainability efforts in local communities; and engaging with and sharing results through international frameworks.
