A very Happy New Year from EUA!

EUA wishes all its newsletter readers a very Happy New Year and has many exciting policy and project-related activities and events planned for 2017.

These include EUA’s Annual Conference that will take place at the University of Bergen in Norway on 6 and 7 April 2017. Under the title “Autonomy and freedom: The future sustainability of universities”, it will focus on university autonomy and academic freedom in a European context marked by political, economic and societal challenges. The discussions will be supported by EUA’s soon-to-be-updated Autonomy Scorecard. EUA members are also encouraged to attend the EUA General Assembly prior to the main conference, during which three new Board members will be elected. Registration is open for this event.

In 2017, EUA will also strengthen its activities on learning and teaching with the new Learning & Teaching Initiative. In this context, EUA will organise the first European Learning & Teaching Forum to facilitate an exchange of experiences among EUA members and other stakeholders. Organised by EUA in collaboration with the Conférence des présidents d’université and hosted by University Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris, the event will take place on 28 and 29 September 2017. The overall Initiative additionally provides EUA member universities with the unique opportunity to participate in thematic peer groups to exchange good practices in organisational, educational and qualitative aspects of learning and teaching with other European universities. The deadline to answer the participation call is 23 January 2017.

In terms of its policy and project work in 2017, EUA will continue to ensure that the voice of universities remains strong, and that the unique role of universities at the regional, national and international level is understood and valued. The Association will maintain its role as a forum and facilitator for European and global debates where universities are active. In particular, EUA will reinforce its work in the areas of university values, funding and social inclusion. It will closely follow and influence the Brexit debate, contribute to the future of the European Framework for Research and Innovation and the Erasmus+ Programme, feed the debate on Open Science and continue its initiatives with universities in energy, among other key topics.

EUA will also work in 2017 to strengthen its services to members and is looking forward to working with universities through the EUA Council for Doctoral Education, the Institutional Evaluation Programme and EUA Solutions.
