Universities Implementing Full Costing

28 February 2011, Hosted by University of Vienna, Austria

To become financially sustainable, universities need to be able to identify the full costs of all their activities. The EUIMA – Full Costing project (“European Universities Implementing the Modernisation Agenda”) continues EUA’s work on full costing by setting up a series of events around Europe to promote the implementation of full costing in European universities, one of which is also this country workshop in Austria.

The aim of this country workshop is to contribute to the promotion of full costing at Austrian universities as one of the crucial pillars of their financial sustainability, in particular by looking at the potential of using full costing as a strategic management tool.  The workshop will also showcase different public funding models (“including models of Studienplatzfinanzierung”), and thus contribute to a wider debate about the financial sustainability of Austrian universities for the future.

The workshop will bring together the leadership and senior management of Austrian universities as well as representatives of relevant ministries and funding bodies who will work together with international experts on full costing and new funding models of teaching and research.

The format of the workshop will be very practical and will draw on examples of good practice from around Europe, which have been selected to suit the specific needs and conditions in Austria. The workshop will also provide a forum for debate, giving participants the opportunity to discuss the conditions needed for the implementation of full costing and its role in ensuring sustainable public funding for universities. Moreover, the country workshop aims to raise awareness for new funding models for Austrian universities by looking at international examples and by discussing the challenges and opportunities of a new funding model for Austrian universities.

This country workshop is aimed exclusively at the national audience in the host country. The event should be of interest to institutional leaders and managers such as rectors, vice rectors, heads of administration and heads of finance departments as well as representatives of relevant government ministries and funding bodies.
