EUIMA 2nd Workshop on Assessment of Collaborative Research, Tampere University of Technology, Finland

24 February 2011

On 22-23 February 2011 the second EUIMA workshop addressing the assessment of practices and outcomes of Collaborative Research activities in the framework of the EUIMA project was hosted by the Tampere University of Technology (TUT), in Tampere, Finland.

The EUIMA-Collaborative Research workshop series aim at collecting good practice in university-based collaborative research  with external partners and its assessment in relation to the various missions of universities within their contexts.

The opening session provided an insight into the Finnish innovation system and the TUT innovation context at institutional, national and local levels. The subsequent discussion sessions, involving case studies from other European universities participating in the project, focused on institutional and strategic approaches to collaborative university-based research, to technology clusters and project frameworks, finally addressing the influence of assessment practices on collaborative research strategies.

Universities and their external businesses and regional partners involved in collaborative research gave joint presentations offering dual perspectives on a diversity of frameworks and practices in fostering and implementing collaborative research models. The workshop gathered 35 participants, with a representation of 53% from Finland and 47% from the rest of the EU. Discussions among participants provided reflections on institutional support and public funding to foster collaborative research, the impacts of these activities on the development of universities and their region, as well as on the measurements used by institutions to assess and consequently inform the evolution of their activities in university-based collaborative research.
