Conclusions of the Arab-Euro Conference on Higher Education (AECHE)

11 July 2013

EUA would like to announce that the conclusions of the recent Arab-Euro Conference on Higher Education (AECHE), held from 30 to 31 May 2013 at the University of Barcelona (UB), have been published in a conference report.

The event was organised jointly with UB and the Association of Arab Universities (AARU) and focused primarily on cooperation possibilities and common challenges between institutions of the two regions.

It was the first ever conference between the two associations (EUA and AARU), gathering more than 250 participants from 175 Arab and European Universities, including more than 110 university leaders.

The conference report highlights the key issues emerging from the discussions, including:

  • The understanding of frameworks and tools for systems’ harmonisation that have been developed in Europe under Bologna and adopted by some Arab countries.
  • The critical importance of two-way mobility between regions and also within the Arab world.
  • The need to share practice on tackling the challenges of graduate employability, and various strategies/approaches that have been developed by universities in response.

The report also identifies four key areas in which the two associations will continue their cooperation in the future: joint Masters’ degrees, employability, quality assurance and internationalisation. These themes, which will be taken forward by specific projects and working groups, will feed into the next conference, scheduled to take place in Jordan in June 2014.

The conference report, published in three languages, can be downloaded here. For more information, please visit the AECHE website.
