Improving gender equality in research organisations
02 March 2017
On 28 February 2017, Science Europe held a workshop in Brussels with stakeholders from research funding organisations, research performing institutions and universities to discuss measures towards improving gender equality in research organisations.
Taking its cues from the practical guide on “Improving Gender Equality in Research Organisations,” which was issued by Science Europe on the occasion of the event, discussions centred on how to avoid unconscious bias in peer review processes; how to monitor gender equality; and how to improve grant management practices.
While panellists agreed that organisational culture and unconscious bias were at the root of persisting gender inequalities within academia, they also acknowledged progress made, particularly in the area of recruitment, as illustrated by a good practice example from the Université de Lausanne, an EUA member university.
