Universities to address renewables integration in energy systems at KU Leuven

04 May 2017

Registrations for the upcoming conference on “Science & Skills for Renewables Integration” are open until 15 May. The event, hosted by KU Leuven from 31 May to 2 June 2017, is the 5th UNI-SET Energy Clustering Event. Through a wide range of sessions, it will focus on the role of universities as educational and research institutions at the centre of the energy transition.

The conference will be an opportunity to discuss the contribution of the higher education sector in developing better energy systems, increasingly based on renewable energy and the evolution towards a carbon-neutral society.

This evolution needs integrated and decentralised energy systems, which in turn generates new research and education challenges for universities to address. These comprise, but are not limited to, multidisciplinary education and skills’ training, collaborative research projects and better understanding of markets and regulatory frameworks.

During the conference, “clustering sessions” will bring together selected experts from different disciplines who will jointly discuss the scientific, social, environmental and regulatory context of expanding renewables. Several “good practice” sessions will illustrate how universities are already adapting their activities and “outlook sessions” will take account of emerging trends. Finally, an expert panel will debate the role and engagement of consumers and the importance of citizen science in the energy transition.

As part of the conference preparation, the UNI-SET project held its seventh Steering Committee meeting on 27 and 28 April in Brussels, Belgium. The committee discussed the development of a number of “energy action agendas” for universities, addressing in particular state-of-the-art educational programmes and the identification of new paradigms in higher education and research. Other topics included the links between the UNI-SET conferences and the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan), and the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap in the field of energy. It was agreed that UNI-SET will contribute to the Landscape Analysis (LA) of the ESFRI Strategic Working Group.
