2017 Marine Plastics Innovation Challenge

19 October 2017

UN Environment and Think Beyond Plastic launch worldwide innovation challenge for university students to fight plastic in oceans.

Marine Plastic Innovation ChallengeEach year, 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans which is the equivalent to a full rubbish truck every minute. This pollution threatens the survival of fish and other sea creatures, destroys marine and coastal ecosystems that support over three billion people worldwide, and endangers human health as it enters the food chain. If no action is taken, by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans.

For this reason, the UN Environment has launched the Clean Seas Campaign and through it is co-hosting the First Marine Plastics Innovation Challenge along with Think Beyond Plastic. The purpose of the challenge is to engage university students and faculties from the world over and to accelerate the search for fresh ideas and solutions to the global issue of marine litter.

To participate, students need to be enrolled in university as of June 2017, be 18 years or over at the time of submission, be supported by a faculty member at their university, and submit an entry before the revised deadline of 20 November 2017 at 23:59 EST.

Instructions on how to enter and judging criteria can be found on the Marine Plastics Innovation challenge website
