Ireland launches online resource to inform Higher Level Institutions’ Student Retention Strategies

09 November 2017

The Irish Minister of State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchel O'Connor, has launched the Online Resource for Learning Analytics (ORLA). Developed by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, ORLA is an open access, online library of resources aimed to support institutions and teachers that wish to develop their capacity for using data to enhance student success.

On average, approximately 15% of third-level students in Ireland do not progress to the second year of their course. Some of these students could be helped to stay in education if institutions applied Learning Analytics (LA) to the data in their in-house student systems, or if they developed new approaches and strategies to support students to continue with their studies. This toll, therefore, aims to support institutions to use existing data to benefit their students’ learning.

ORLA is a key output of the Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining for Learning Impact project and was developed in collaboration with and through the contributions of over 70 lecturers, students, researchers, student advisers, IT and administrative professionals, teaching and learning experts and librarians from more than 17 institutions across Ireland.
