Europe and its universities – what lies ahead for 2018

10 January 2018

An interesting new year has just begun for Europe. 2018 will be the last before the European elections and the year when the Brexit negotiations need to be finalised. It will also be marked by the discussions on the next Multiannual Financial Framework, the EU’s long-term budget that will include the new Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and the new Erasmus Programme.

Moreover, there is a new dynamic in higher education policy in Brussels. At the end of 2017, education suddenly became an important EU priority with the launch of the Education Union and, importantly, France promoting universities as a part of its vision for Europe. At the same time, 2018 will be the year of the Bologna Ministerial Conference in Paris, which will set the future agenda for the European Higher Education Area.

EUA is already active in all these areas, and we are looking forward to working with you, our members, to make the voice of universities heard, and to provide evidence and ideas for European policies that work.

Regarding the new funding programmes, EUA will step up its campaign for sufficient, sustainable, and simple EU funding for universities, and promote the messages that came from members in the Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+ reviews.

For the Education Union and the Bologna Ministerial Meeting, EUA will promote initiatives that can facilitate university cooperation across borders and further the synergies between research, education, and innovation that only universities can provide. The Learning and Teaching Initiative will continue to be an important forum for members to share practices and ideas.

Looking beyond European policies, the 2018 Annual Conference will focus on engaged and responsible universities and their potential to interact with and impact society. Furthermore, EUA will take a deeper look at equality and diversity in both staff and students, as well as issues of ethics and integrity. It will also continue collaborating with its global partners.

As always, EUA’s work is underpinned by a continuous dialogue with its members through various activities. 2018 will see a number of events on different topics, including the European Quality Assurance Forum, the Council for Doctoral Education’s Annual Meeting, and the bi-annual EUA Funding Forum. We are looking forward to meeting you on these occasions!

News about all of our upcoming activities, project and events can be found on the EUA website, in our newsletter and on social media.

Wishing you a very happy new year,
