Switzerland is again a full participant in Horizon2020. The decision to re-admit the country came after the Swiss ratification of the Free Movement Agreement for Croatia on 16 December 2016.

EUA has a long history of supporting dialogue between universities in the European Union and its neighbourhood as well as between neighbouring countries. In Eastern Europe, Ukraine has the largest number of EUA members and is a good example of concrete collaboration across Europe and of typical EUA activities in the Eastern and Southern Neighbourhood Countries.

Registration is open for the EUA Annual Conference 2017 on “Autonomy and freedom: The future sustainability of universities.” The event will take place at the University of Bergen in Norway on 6 and 7 April 2017.

EUA has released the results of its 2016 member consultation on Horizon 2020. As the European Commission undertakes its mid-term review of the current Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and prepares discussions on its post-2020 successor, EUA invited its members to share their views and experiences with Horizon 2020.

The first two years of Horizon 2020 show that the current Framework Programme (FP) for Research and Innovation has attracted more applications, more actors and more high quality proposals than ever before. Various evaluations also show that research funded through the FPs is among the best ways to obtain added value from European public investment.

For several generations of the Framework Programme (FP) on Research and Innovation, simplification has remained at the top of the implementation agenda. The European Commission had promised that Horizon 2020 would enhance simplification, in particular through streamlined funding rates and other simplified rules for participation. The mid-term review of Horizon 2020 provides a timely opportunity to assess the extent to which the programme has delivered on its promises so far, and to define the scope for further simplification.
