Europe and its universities – what lies ahead for 2018

An interesting new year has just begun for Europe. 2018 will be the last before the European elections and the year when the Brexit negotiations need to be finalised. It will also be marked by the discussions on the next Multiannual Financial Framework, the EU’s long-term budget that will include the new Framework Programme for Research and Innovation and the new Erasmus Programme. What is in store for European universities in 2018?

Where should the EU invest in the future? Choose your priorities and get engaged!

The European Commission has launched a series of public consultations to ask stakeholders and citizens in which areas Europe should invest in the future. As the next Multiannual Financial Framework will include the next Erasmus Programme, the Framework Programme for Research and structural funds, EUA calls on its members to respond to the relevant consultations, pointing the importance of investing in education and research in the next decade.

Reminder: Take part in the EUA survey on doctoral education in Europe

We are happy to remind your institution of our invitation to take part in our study on the organisation of doctoral education in Europe, by answering our online survey. As the first survey of its kind since 2014, it provides an opportunity to establish an evidence base on which to build in years to come. The deadline to complete the survey is 31 January 2018.

Reminder: Help EUA advocate for Erasmus+ grants for international talent with protection status

EUA members and partners are invited to voice their support and to provide feedback on a draft advocacy proposal to the EU to establish a specific grant under the Erasmus+ programme for support of the placement of scholars and students with international protection status at European higher education and research institutions.

Open Science: EUA discusses "Big Deals", research data management and sets priorities for 2018

The EUA High-Level Group on "big deals" with scientific publishers and the Expert Group on Science 2.0/Open Science met in Brussels on 10-12 January 2018 to discuss negotiations with publishers, research data management and open data. The groups also agreed on priorities for 2018.

EUA to support Kazakh universities towards autonomy

The TRUNAK project officially started at the end of 2017 with a kick-off meeting in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. The project, supported by the European Union under Erasmus+, runs until October 2020 and seeks to enhance university autonomy in Kazakhstan. In this project, EUA makes use of its long-standing expertise in addressing the issues of autonomy, accountability, and funding.

High-level conference on the future EU finances

The 2018 financial discussions were kickstarted by the European Commission at the high-level conference held on 8-9 January entitled “Shaping our future – Designing the next multiannual financial framework”, via its think-tank, the European Political Strategy Centre.

EUA is pleased to announce the date for its next Energy Clustering Event which will be hosted by the University of Lorraine (Nancy, France) on 21-22 March 2018. The event seeks to strengthen the dialogue on the current and future role of universities in the triangle of Europe’s energy, research and higher education policy.
