1st European L&T Forum facilitates the discussions on universities’ education mission

The Forum, which took place on 28-29 September 2017 in Paris, France, was attended by more than 280 participants from 34 countries who welcomed the opportunity to discuss institutional responses to new modes of learning, changing student bodies, the need to equip students with transversal skills, rewards and recognition schemes for teaching, measures to shift mindsets so that research and teaching are valued equally. A set of 10 European Principles for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching, based on the preliminary outcomes of the EFFECT project, was also introduced so to start discussions on a common understanding of Europe’s education mission.
“The world is changing very fast and we have to prepare students more than ever to be agile and efficient in the knowledge society,” said host of the Forum and UPMC President Jean Chambaz to emphasise the importance of universities adapting new realities.

Michael Gaebel, Director of the Higher Education Policy Unit at EUA added: “We’re giving our education mission more attention at a political and institutional level. But we’re still not there yet.”

For this purpose, EUA is planning a series of activities that will continue the discussions on learning and teaching. Later this autumn, a call for participants for the second round of thematic peer groups will be launched. EUA will present the outcomes of the forum through a webinar to take place on 29 November. The conclusions of the activities in 2017 will feed into an EUA policy position on learning and teaching that will be debated by EUA's Council at the upcoming meeting.

As Cecilia Christersson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Malmö University and one of the keynote speakers in the Forum concluded: “We need to ask ourselves every week what our raison d’être is. Universities exist to serve students and societies.”  EUA’s range of activities on enhancing learning and teaching will aim to contribute to an increased attention to how universities do this through their teaching mission.
