EUA after the Brussels terror attacks

EUA after the Brussels terror attacksTwo weeks after terrorists attacked the Brussels airport and metro, the EUA staff is still quite shocked and saddened by the events that took place on 22 March 2016 and claimed the lives of so many people.

EUA would again like to thank friends and colleagues who have sent messages expressing concern for the Brussels secretariat, which is based not far from the location of the metro attack. Nearly all members of the staff in the Brussels office use public transportation and several pass by the Maelbeek station every day. Many EUA staffers also frequently fly out of Zaventem airport. Fortunately, all of the secretariat is safe and well. It is one thing to watch it on the news, another to actually be a part of it. The overall atmosphere of the city has changed and our thoughts are with those impacted by the attacks. The Association would again like to express its most heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

Finally, EUA would like to draw attention not only to the barbarity of these attacks, but to the appalling reality that such attacks continue to happen. EUA has felt the need to stand up for university values even more than in the past in light of the recent crescendo of political, economic and societal challenges facing Europe and the world. National and international financial crises, weakening solidarity, growing fanaticism and political repression, as well as armed conflict in neighbouring countries, undeniably have an impact on higher education.
