Happy New Year from everyone at EUA! Some highlights to look out for in 2011

EUA is pleased to announce it will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. Below is just a selection of upcoming events and dates for your diary in 2011.
Season's Greetings


• 22 February – launch of new report in Brussels, “Financially sustainable universities: European universities diversifying incomes streams”
• 13-15 AprilEUA Annual Conference 2011 – “Investing Today in Talent for Tomorrow”, this anniversary conference will include the election of the next EUA president (who will take post in 2012) and four new board members (Host: Aarhus University, Denmark)
• November 2011: 6th European Quality Assurance Forum (More information to follow soon).



EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) events will include:
• 20-21 JanuaryEUA-CDE Workshop - Mobility and Collaboration in Doctoral Education - international and inter-sectoral (ELTE University, Budapest, Hungary)
• 9-10 June: EUA-CDE Annual Meeting (Carlos III University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain)


EUA underpins policy work with projects that focus on the collection and analysis of data, comparative reflection on policy development, and the identification of examples of good practice from different countries.The project section of our website contains information about all of our ongoing projects and information about relevant opportunities for members to participate in. This year EUA will be launching a wide range of new projects in areas such as doctoral education, quality and internationalisation.

Reminder: EUA member survey (deadline 17 Jan 2011)

EUA is currently conducting a strategic review of its services to members in order to respond better to their needs and to map a clear path for the organisation’s activities in the coming years.


We would like to thank everyone who has already taken the time to complete the questionnaire. For those who have not yet done so, we would really appreciate you filling in the online questionnaire by 17 January 2011.It is not limited to one response per member institution, so EUA encourages as many staff as possible from member universities to participate.

Impact of the economic crisis on European higher education: EUA publishes latest update ahead of major new report

EUA has been monitoring the evolution of the economic crisis and its effect on higher education systems in Europe since its onset in 2008 and has published a series of short reports. This week, we publish our latest update report ahead of a major new study on the financial sustainability of European higher education that is currently being finalised and will be published on 22 February 2011.

Register for EUA’s Annual Conference: Investing Today in Talent for Tomorrow (Aarhus, Denmark, 13-15 April 2011)

EUA will celebrate its 10th Anniversary at its next Annual Conference to be held at Aarhus University in Denmark from 13-15 April 2011. The conference provides the opportunity to take stock of what EUA has achieved so far and will launch discussions of future priorities and the most important milestones for the next decade.

New call for proposals: ERC Advanced Grants for senior researchers

The European Research Council has issued a new call for proposals open to senior researchers in any field of science and scholarship, to support them in their pioneering 'blue sky' research.

Croatia to join EU Lifelong Learning Programme

Croatia will participate fully in the European Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme and Youth in Action Programme from January 2011. Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Radovan Fuchs, Croatia's Minister of Science, Education and Sports, signed a 'memorandum of understanding' at the recent meeting of European education Ministers in Bruges, Belgium.
