WG Session I concentrates on ways in which institutions are developing specific missions and profiles to address the needs of the knowledge society.


WG1    Theme: Making strategic choices 1 – How to identify strategic goals?

WG1 explores the kind of issues to consider in identifying ambitious yet realistic strategic goals, including (a) including environmental scanning and taking account of competitors as potential partners and (b) considering internal resources and structures.

    It is often the case that a university leadership has identified sound strategic goals but its strategy flounders on lack of internal support. WG2 explores successful attempts at engaging the academic community in formulating strategic goals.

      Special session by Frans van Vught, EUA Board member

      An overview of the ‘European Governance Reform Study’, commissioned by DGEAC of the European Commission, and done by a consortium of European higher education research centers coordinated by CHEPS. The study addresses both external and internal (institutional) governance issues and is based on 32 national reports and a very large web-based survey of HEIs (with over 600 HEIs responding). It gives a thorough overview of the issues and trends regarding higher education governance and management in Europe.
