Autumn Conference 2006: "European Universities as Catalysts in Promoting Regional Innovation" Print Email this page

"European Universities as Catalysts in Promoting Regional Innovation"

Board, Council and Secretaries General meetings
The Universities of Brno, Czech Republic, 19-21 October 2006

Universities, as the main producers of qualified knowledge workers as well as of new knowledge and innovation, are regarded as key actors in knowledge regions. Universities themselves are becoming more aware of the importance of being sufficiently responsive to social and economic needs, while policy makers at national and regional level are increasingly underlining the role of universities in providing innovation.

In plenary and working group sessions, the Conference will:

  • Enable exchange of good practice drawn from different regional examples including exchange of experience between different public and private partners
  • Identify instruments and action universities themselves can adopt and implement to enhance their contribution to regional development
  • Develop strategies for ensuring both local/regional focus and global outreach as components of institutional mission
  • Clarify the role of European policies and actions in promoting universities as key partners in regional development

The Conference is of particular interest to rectors, vice-rectors, heads of research and international relations. For more information, please consult the conference programme, background documents and the hosts website.

South Moravia – rapidly becoming the most innovative region in the Czech Republic
The location of this conference is ideal for addressing the issues of how universities are contributing to building creative regional environments. Second only in size to Prague, Brno is the economic and cultural centre of South Moravia. The city is within easy reach of London, Munich, Prague, Vienna and Budapest. For your convenience, shuttle buses to Brno have been arranged for flights arriving into Vienna.

The City of Brno
The city and region is rich in history, culture and architecture, which will be intertwined in the Conference programme. The Conference and Welcome Reception will be held in the Town Hall, a former Dominican monastery dating from the 15th century. Other social events include a concert by the Janacek Academy of Music and the Performing Arts in the Besedni Dum Concert Hall; a folklore and gastronomic evening in the nearby chateau at Slavkov (Austerlitz); trips to UNESCO-listed Moravian towns and ancient wine cellars; and a tour of Brno.
