Autumn Conference 2005: "Research in European Universities: Strategies and Funding" Print Email this page

"Research in European Universities: Strategies and Funding"

Board, Council and Secretaries General meetings
University of Uppsala, Uppsala, Sweden, 20-22 October 2005

Theme outline
A considerable proportion of Europe’s research capacity is concentrated in the continent’s universities. Through their multiple mission encompassing knowledge creation, transfer and dissemination, universities are at the centre of Europe’s major effort to create both leading edge and sustainable knowledge societies. Universities are increasingly aware of the need for fundamental change and transformation if they are to maintain their position and reinforce their contribution to society in a world of growing competition and often decreasing public funding.
The conference will address the challenges that European higher education institutions face in terms of cultural, governance and management changes needed, and the impact they have on their research activities. For many institutions, the changes will require the development of strategies and a thorough review of their specific funding and costing structures in relation to their specific profiles.
In this context the conference will assess the current state of system changes for research funding, provide an insight into different practices applied by institutions across Europe and launch a broad discussion on possible European funding and costing models.

Programme
The Programme Booklet, with further information on the theme; Speaker Biographies, for both plenary and working group sessions; the List of Participants; and Background Documents are now available. In order to gain more insight into the Conference and its theme, EUA recommends that participants consult these documents prior to the Conference.
