09.00 – 10.15 Plenary Session V: The challenges of governing increasingly diverse higher education systems
D 20 building - Conference Hall
The growth of student enrolments has led to the creation of a mix of institutions (e. g. private/public; binary systems). At the same time societal demands have led to a ‘stretching’ of conventional functions of research to include new research and innovation activities. Institutions are also affected by European reform processes that tend to make them at least superficially more alike in terms of educational structures while they are under pressure to compete both nationally and globally. Thus, system diversity often leads to a blurring of institutional profiles and to mission drift both in terms of research and teaching activities. How successful are universities in defining their specific profiles and in negotiating their place in their national system?
Chair: Sijbolt Noorda, President of the Association of Universities in The Netherlands (VSNU) and Former President, University of Amsterdam

- Karol Musiol, Rector, Jagiellonian University and Vice President, Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools, Poland
