European universities are facing a great number of challenges such as demographic change (ageing population, population movement, gender issues), social justice (making use of the whole potential societal talent pool), employability (the contribution to the creation of a flexible European labour force by entering into a close dialogue and cooperation between universities and employers in relation to education and research issues), and the competitiveness of European universities in the provision of education, research and innovation. These challenges will need to be addressed both at the national and at the international level.
