You will find details on the social programme (for participants and accompanying persons) on the link to the accommodation form which will be included in the registration confirmation email you will get from EUA once you have registered successfully for the EUA Conference.

I. Social Programme for conference participants and accompanying persons (included in the registration fee)

1. Welcome Reception and Opera  “The Magic Flute” at the municipal theatre on  October 8th

2. Gala dinner on October 9th

II. Social programme for companions (included in the registration fee for companions)

1. Half-day trip to Laubach on Friday, October 9th, from 9:00 – 15:00; meeting point: JLU main building, entrance hall

 • Laubach is a picturesque town near Giessen with a beautiful castle dating back to the 13th century. The owner is Carl Georg count of Solms-Laubach. You will have the chance to visit one of Europe’s largest private libraries including a special exhibition on the “Solms Women”.

2. Half-day guided city tour of Giessen on Saturday, October 10 from 9:00 – 13:00; meeting point: JLU main building, entrance hall

 • Botanical Garden Giessen

• Old City Centre with a visit of the farmer’s market

• Visit of the Schiffenberg monastery, including coffee break  

 

 • Bus shuttle included.

III. Social programme for kids (not included in the conference fee)

1. Mini Mathematikum of the world’s first hands-on mathematical science museum

• Experience a different side of mathematics! “Hands-on” is our first objective, which will allow you to really get involved and experience stunning phenomena yourself.

            

IV. Optional excursions for all participants after the conference on Saturday, 10 October

1. Liebig Museum Giessen and Mathematikum; meeting point: JLU main building at 14.30, entrance hall

•The Liebig Museum is located in what was once Justus von Liebig’s famous laboratory. The father of modern experimental chemistry taught at Justus Liebig University from 1824 – 1852. Participants have the opportunity to visit the adjacent Mathematikum afterwards. The Giessen Mathematikum is the world’s first hands-on mathematical museum; it was conceived by Albrecht Beutelspacher, professor for mathematics at Justus Liebig University. Alternatively, participants can follow a guided tour of the old city centre of Giessen. Shops, cafés and restaurants are nearby.

2. Guided tour of Gail’sche Park in Rodheim and of Gleiberg Castle (4 hours); meeting point JLU main building at 14.30, entrance hall

• The private Gail’sche Park and its villa were built by the entrepreneur Wilhelm Gail from Giessen at the end of the 19th century. It is an English landscape garden comprising a comparatively small area. It was designed by Andreas Weber, a student of the famous Heinrich Siesmayer/Frankfurt. The park has been opened for public only a few years ago. Gleiberg Castle in Krofdorf-Gleiberg is a ruin since the Hessian Wars of the 17th century. In the 1830s an association was founded to maintain the remains of this cultural monument for future generations. After the guided tour the participants can dine in the castle restaurant or simply enjoy the stunning view from the castle.

3. Rauischholzhausen: Guided tour of Rauischholzhausen Castle and park (4 hours); meeting point JLU main building at 14.30, entrance hall

• Romantic Rauischholzhausen Manor is full of nooks and crannies and was built in the 1870s. Justus Liebig University has been using it as a conference center since 1949. The picturesque scenery is perfect for JLU’s annual summer festival, open-air theatre, and other events. Rauischholzhausen Park was designed by the famous Heinrich Siesmayer. Participants can also visit the research fields for horticulture and nature reserves (on demand).
