The Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna is the most ancient university in the Western world.
Despite the difficulty in establishing the exact date of its foundation, the year 1088 may be accepted as the conventional date to indicate the period in which a free and autonomous teaching and studying activity separated from the ecclesiastical schools began in Bologna.
The institution that today we call University began by taking shape in Bologna at the end of the 11th century, when scholars of Grammar, Rhetoric and Logic dedicated themselves to the study of law. In 1158 emperor Federico I promulgated the Constitutio Habita, in which the University was legally declared a place where research could develop independently from any other power. On September 18, 1988 in Piazza Maggiore, Bologna, the Rectors of 430 universities from all world continents signed the Magna Charta Universitatum Europaeum during the celebration of the ninth centenary of the University of Bologna, formally recognized as the Alma Mater of all universities. On June 19, 1999, the Ministries of Higher Education from 29 EU Countries gather in Bologna to sign an important agreement. This document, known as the Declaration of Bologna, gave birth to an important, irreversible process of standardization of the different European higher education systems - the Bologna Process.
The main objective of the Bologna Process is the creation of a European Higher Education Area and the promotion of the European system of higher education at a world level to increase its international competitiveness. Thanks to its 23 faculties, 70 departments and more than 80,000 students enrolled, the University of Bologna is one of the biggest higher educational institutions in Italy.
Apart from its main campus in the city of Bologna, the Alma Mater Studiorum has set up four branches in the towns of Ravenna, Forlì, Rimini, Cesena and gets also a detached site in Buenos Ayres.
The Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna is divided into 23 Faculties allocated differently in and outside Bologna.
The Faculty of Agriculture is one of them. It is slightly decentralized from the other ones but can avail itself of large structures and spaces.
The study and teaching of the Agricultural Science principles have always been highly considered in Bologna, a city whose prosperity has largely taken advantage from agriculture through the centuries.
According to the University reform, the Faculty of Agriculture has managed to outline a new teaching provision based on a wider selection of skilled human resources, by treasuring its long-established academic tradition and its excellent reputation at the national and international level and the availability of modern facilities and relevant supporting amenities.
The well-structured and broad range of study courses manages to guarantee an adequate cultural and educational training for students in order to provide a cohesive answer to job market demands. It’s undeniable all diversified sectors of the agricultural business would hold a great importance today and tomorrow.
Furthermore, the Faculty of Agriculture is now actively involved at working about the Energy issue and the Environmental Impact decrease.
