Spain hands EU Presidency over to Belgium
July 14, 2010
The Belgian government has announced its priorities for its six-month Presidency of the EU (July-December 2010), which fall in line with those announced and pursued by Spain in the framework of the “trio Presidency” with Hungary. Beside social issues and economic governance, the Belgian EU Presidency will also promote the reinforcement of the EU’s innovation policy, which will be the focus of this Autumn's European Council.
Specific priorities for higher education and research include further work on simplifying administrative procedures and the financial monitoring of the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Development as well as the preparation of its successor; fostering free movement of knowledge with the European Research Area especially through promoting better integration of universities and research institutions within the knowledge triangle; and fostering the role of the regions in implementing and monitoring European scientific policy.
