EUA’s series of TRENDS reports on higher education in Europe show that while progress has been made through the implementation of structural reforms and the enhancement of institutional frameworks, there is a need to pay more attention to the process of learning and teaching itself. Therefore, EUA launched new activities in learning and teaching in 2017 with the aim to:

  • Identify and better engage with relevant university communities/those in charge of learning and teaching at institutional level, and dedicated networks and organisations;
  • Provide EUA members with opportunities for peer-learning and exchange of good practice;
  • Thus strengthen the voice of EUA in ongoing policy debates addressing the quality and relevance of universities by providing direct feedback from members on changing learning landscapes.

In this context, EUA organises the European Learning & Teaching Forum to facilitate the exchange of experience on learning and teaching in higher education among EUA members and other interested stakeholders. In order to prepare and complement the Forum, EUA also coordinates the work of a set of thematic peer groups on learning and teaching. In addition, the EUA led EFFECT project contributes to the teaching enhancement in European universities.

EUA organises thematic peer groups on learning and teaching to strengthen the bottom-up approach in engaging the European universities, to foster the community building, and to complement the Forum.

The main objectives of the thematic peer groups are:

  • To discuss and explore practices and lessons learnt in organising and implementing learning and teaching in European universities
  • To contribute to the enhancement of learning and teaching by identifying key recommendations on the selected theme

In 2018 the thematic peer groups centre their work on the following themes:

1. Promoting active learning in universities. This group focuses on the role of students in co-creating their own learning and explores how to further foster inclusiveness and collaboration. Universities taking part in this group are expected to actively engage at least one student per institution in the group’s work.

2. Continuous development of teaching competences. This group focuses on institutional policies and practices that support teachers in developing their teaching skills and exchange experience with other faculty members.

3. Career paths in teaching. This group discusses professional career paths for teachers in European universities and what can be done to better promote career progression in teaching, e.g. by offering rewards and creating other tangible gains for people involved in teaching enhancement.

4. Evaluation of learning and teaching. This group discusses how universities evaluate learning and teaching at the programme level so to ensure that programmes are fit for purpose and support students in achieving learning outcomes.

The first Forum was organised on 28-29 September 2017 by EUA in collaboration with the Conférence des présidents d’université (CPU) and hosted by University Pierre and Marie Curie (UPMC) in Paris, France.

The primary target audience of the Forum were vice-rectors for academic affairs, deans, programme directors, academic staff in the universities, and researchers in the field of learning and teaching. The Forum was also open for participation by policy-makers and other stakeholders in higher education.

Based on the work of the EUA Learning & Teaching Initiative, the EUA Council endorsed a policy statement on 26 January 2018 that addresses the changing learning landscape in European universities.

The paper underlines the importance of learning and teaching (L&T) as a core mission and responsibility of universities. It is intended to guide EUA’s work on the topic, both as the voice of universities in policy debates, including the discussions of the Bologna Follow-up Group and the upcoming Ministerial meeting in Paris, and as a platform for member collaboration.

Ten Principles for Enhancing Learning & Teaching at the European level, 1 February 2018

European Principles for the Enhancement of Learning & Teaching serve institutional leaders in their quest to ensure quality, relevance and attractiveness of higher education learning and teaching in European universities. Interview with Professor Jean Chambaz, President of the University Pierre and Marie Curie and member of the Board of the European University Association about the requisites for good learning and teaching in the run up to the European University Association’s first pan-European Learning and Teaching Forum. UPMC hosted university leaders and renowned experts at the flagship EUA conference on learning and teaching in Paris 28-29 September 2017. Professor Chambaz is a staunch advocate for fostering new learning and teaching initiatives through pan-European university collaboration and shared good practice.

GROUSSEL_Carré (Crédit CPU)Interview with Gilles Roussel, President of the Conference of University Presidents (CPU), President of the University Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée and researcher in technology and computer science. For over 40 years the CPU has participated actively in the public debate on education issues, supporting university presidents in their responsibilities and promoting the French university system and its values. CPU co-organised EUA’s 1st Learning and Teaching Forum which was hosted by the University Pierre and Marie Curie (UPMC). Gilles Roussel was speaking alongside other European university advocates for exchange and success in learning and teaching.
