Vaananen_KalervoKalervo Väänänen received his MD in 1977 and his PhD 1980 from the University of Oulu in Finland. He was appointed as Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology in 1989 at the University of Oulu. In 1996, he was appointed as Professor of Medical Cell Biology at the University of Uppsala in Sweden. From 1998 to 2009, he served as Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Turku, and from 2010 to 2012 as an Academic Rector of the University of Eastern Finland. Presently he is the Rector of the University of Turku.

Professor Väänänen has published approximately 300 original and review papers in journals and textbooks and holds a number of patents. He is the recipient of several awards, including the Inno-Suomi Prize (presented by the President of Finland) in 2001 and SalusAnsvar´s Nordic Prize in Medicine in 2006. He was invited to be a member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and Letters in 1998 and a member of Academy of Technical Sciences in 2010. Professor Väänänen acted as Chair of the Health Research Council in the Academy of Finland from 2004 to 2009. He also acted as Chair of Universities Finland (UNIFI) from 2014 to 2015 and is presently a member of the Board of UNIFI.
