Professor Liisa Laakso is Rector of the University of Tampere. She holds a doctorate in social sciences and a docentship in development studies at the University of Helsinki. She has previously worked as professor of international development at the University of Jyväskylä and professor of world politics at the University of Helsinki in Finland. From 2010 to 2015, she worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki. She was appointed Rector of the University of Tampere at the start of 2016.

Rector Laakso has further developed the international networks of the University of Tampere and supported the open publishing of research results and new research policies. As Rector, she plays a major role in the planning of the nationally significant merger of three higher education institutions in Tampere. She and holds several positions of trust at both national and international level.

Rector Laakso is a member of the Government of Finland’s Research and Innovation Council. In addition, she sits on the Finnish Research Infrastructure Committee at the Academy of Finland, where she has also been a member of the steering group that reviews the state of scientific research in Finland. She has been a member of the Horizon 2020 ad hoc Advisory Group on Gender. Her international posts include serving as the co-convener of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes’ Working Group on Governance and being a member of the Social and Cultural Innovation Strategy Working Group of the European Commission’s European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures.
